Generation X Unite: Obama is the Only Logical Choice
If you are in your thirties, plus or minus a few years, you and your buds have been known collectively
as
Generation X, The Thirteenth, The New Lost, The MTV Generation, The Slackers, and
our personal favorite, Rosemary's Babies. Guess what? It's all true. But you are also smart, fair-minded, realistic, practical, tenacious and tough. You have been providing the can-do spirit, work ethic, creative thinking, and common sense approach that has been driving the American economy for years, throughout the Internet Revolution,
while the Baby Boomer leaders of our country have
been busy:
- getting our government so quagmired in hostile, bi-partisan politics that it has been rendered
utterly ineffective, with the extra added bonus of bringing our economy to a screeching halt.
- getting our military so quagmired in Iraq that there is no end in sight, while the flag-draped
coffins
keep arriving at Dover AFB, looking exactly the same as they did through
the eyes of
a
child
in the Vietnam era.
- mortgaging our country's future, not to mention ensuring that we GenXers will never see a dime
of our FICA taxes, to finance a non-winnable war to bring democracy to a stone-age country
that
doesn't even want it, while turning their backs on the suffering of American citizens.
- disgusting us with the ugliness of campaign tactics, the corruption of campaign financing, and the
pandering to
special campaign-contributor interests, all of which have been getting progressively
worse throughout our adult lives, or more specifically, during the last twenty years
of win-at-any-cost Boomer politics.
- giving us a freakin' headache with their incessant public squabbling and their penchant for
legislating morality for all, instead of justice for all.
We Saw It Coming
This, of course, comes as no big surprise to us. For years – sixteen years to be exact, since the day Bill Clinton was first elected – we've been watching from below as the Radical 60's Generation has fulfilled its destiny, aging into the Radical Right on the one side, the Radical
Left on the other, and never the twain shall meet. The Boomers and their...
- utter inability to suck it up and admit when they're wrong
- sense of absolute moral righteousness and all that tedious, mind-numbing preaching that
goes along with it
- tendency to turn the simplest things into quagmired ideological arguments, wasting everyone's
time and sapping everyone's strength
- steadfast insistence on towing the party line, rather than thinking for themselves
... have left our nation with the singular greatest problem it faces today: our current Boomer leaders are totally incapable of setting aside their differences long enough to accomplish anything, from eliminating the number one threat to our national survival, which is obviously our dependence on Saudi oil, to (we suspect) deciding about lunch:
"Tex-Mex or Chinese? No, wait, that's no good. The Democrats like Tex-Mex... OK, skip Tex-Mex, let's make it Chinese or Italian. All right, here's what we do: convene a subcommittee, waste a coupla weeks with hearings about Chinese vs. Italian, then defer our decision until the next session, take a month off and fly in that lobbyist jet to visit our money in the Caymans, all courtesy of the stupid taxpayers. Ha-ha, suckers!"
Where GenX Comes In
Blatant exaggeration? Sure, why not? The Bush Administration's been doing for years. This is where we, the
long-maligned GenXers, come in. Our lunch discussion goes more like this:
"Whaddya want for lunch, dude, Tex-Mex or Chinese? Like, whatever... just bring it to my cube because that pain-in-the-ass Khalid guy over in End-User Systems really needs this servlet up and
running by
COB yesterday."
Actually, we owe a debt of gratitude to the Boomers for making us this way. We're pretty sure they invented the buzzwords that have ruled our day-to-day activities since we entered the workforce twenty years ago: empowerment and accountability. Too bad they've never imposed accountability on themselves, which brings us to the point of all of this:
Why Our Own Senator Barack Obama is the Only Logical Choice to be
the
Democratic Nominee and the Next President of the United States
First of all, because we are GenXers, we're sure that there will be no Boomer-style squabbling over which exact birth years constitute GenX.
Like Senator Obama, the Nameless GenXer is 46 years-old and she's here to tell you: being a child of the slum of a decade that
was the 70s has zero relationship to being a flower child of the 60s. We are the standard bearers of
Generation X.
Barack vs. Hillary
This is difficult because we respect and admire Senator Clinton very much for being smart, tough, capable, and very human. We believe that Hillary genuinely has the best interest of the American
people
at heart and, in a vacuum, would be an outstanding President. Unfortunately, that is not the reality of Washington in 2008.
If she were to become our next President, it is painfully obvious that the hostility towards her on the part of GOP-Boomers-in-Congress, who cling to the party line of thou shalt hate Hillary, will only intensify, causing four more years of bi-partisan quagmire (and leaving us fairer-minded GenXers sadder than ever that hate has any place whatsoever in American government, and counting the days until the preachy Boomers are out of politics entirely and the Rush Limbaugh's Willie Cunningham's of the world fade into obscurity,
or hell, whichever comes first).
Not only will Senator Obama go to the White House sans all that Boomer baggage, he will
bring his...
Inherent GenX Characteristics
Thanks to the Presidential Administrations that Senator Obama witnessed in his maturation years: the embodiment of corruption that was Nixon, the unpardonably bad golf shot that was Ford, and the well-intentioned ineffectiveness that was Carter, he has the same finely-tuned political bullshit-o-meter that everyone who came of age in the 70s has, enabling him to see the scam behind the plan coming from a mile away. Combine that with his innate intelligence and exemplary education, and nobody will get stuff over on him, not nobody, not no how. Case in point: his deadly accurate prediction of how launching a war in Iraq would turn out, while the majority of Congress, including Senator Clinton, was hoodwinked by the evil Bush regime.
He will bring the GenX no-nonsense approach to the Oval Office and when he gets 'em to the table, he will force them to block out the noise and focus on what matters, or spoken more plainly: cut through all that petty Boomer bullshit and get the job done. He will not lose sight of the mission-critical objectives no matter how many interruptions and distractions are swirling around him, or how hard people are working to undermine him.
He will not be afraid of hard work or hard decisions, and will be inclined to make the right decisions for our country even if they are unpopular. He will bring the GenX work ethic to everything he does, will take pride in his product, and will do everything in his power to deliver, on time and within budget.
We know this is true because we GenXers are living it. Can we guarantee he will succeed? No.
But he certainly has a better shot at it than the Boomer Hillary does. We also believe he can bring two things to the Presidency that we have never seen in our lifetime...
Scenes We'd Like to See
National and International Respect for the Office of The President of the United States of America
We believe Senator Obama has the potential to a bring a new brand of integrity, boldness, fairness, smart decision making and, yes, likeability, that will earn back respect for the Office on the part of our own legislators and citizens, the leaders of our global allies, and possibly even some of our enemies.
The Same Accountability that WE Bring to Work Every Day
We also believe he has the ingenuity to impose real accountability on those who work for him and will not tolerate anything less. The Boomers-in-Congress aren't going to like that one bit, of course, but tough nuggies on them because he will be their boss and like all GenXers, he will not lose sight of his accountability to his own boss, the American people.
